Above Velden am Wörthersee, a 3D archery course leads about 3.8 km through woods and meadows. Along the way, 32 life-size model animals serve as targets, which you shoot at with bow and arrow from marked pegs. If you don’t have your own equipment, you can hire a bow and arrows on site and get a short introduction – so beginners and families with children manage well too. Allow about three hours for one round as a pair.

The starting point is the Gasthof Thomann on the Thomannweg, where you can also park (car park P2 only) and stop for food after your round. At weekends it opens from 10:00; on weekdays rental equipment is available only with a phone reservation. Sturdy shoes are sensible, as the path is steep in places and slippery after rain; long trousers protect against ticks.

Tennis rackets and balls on a clay court

There’s no need to miss out on your match on holiday. Around the Klopeiner See there are plenty of well-kept clay courts, especially at the sports hotels by the lake – some with indoor courts too, so you can play even on a rainy day. Whether non-residents can hire courts by the hour varies from place to place; a quick phone call or a question at the tourist information is the fastest way to find out.

For beginners and children, the tennis taster sessions with the Aktiv Card are free in summer – rackets and balls are provided, and children from the age of four can join in if accompanied by an adult. Curious about something new? Bad Eisenkappel has Carinthia’s first padel court, and there too you can try this trendy sport free of charge with the Aktiv Card.

This running loop starts right outside the front door and links the three lakes of the municipality: first you run to the Turnersee, then along quiet side roads and farm tracks north to the small Kleinsee, surrounded by woods, and on over to the Klopeiner See. After a stretch along the shore, you head back through the villages to St. Primus. The terrain is gently rolling, and the paths are mostly tarmacked or well surfaced.

Depending on the route you choose, the whole loop is around 14 kilometres, more if you add a lap of the Klopeiner See. You can shorten it at any time, for example to just the Turnersee. It is our own route idea, not a signposted running course – a running app or offline map helps with finding your way. Some sections run along roads without a pavement.

The Klopeiner See is one of the few Carinthian lakes whose shore is publicly accessible all the way round – a continuous lakeside promenade of around 5.3 kilometres runs along the water. The loop is almost flat and mostly surfaced, which makes it just as good for an easy run as for a walk with a pushchair. The north shore at Klopein and Seelach is livelier, with lidos, cafés and restaurants; the south shore is quieter and more natural.

The nicest time to run is early in the morning: the promenade is almost empty then, the air still cool and the lake usually as smooth as a mirror. A lap takes about 30 to 35 minutes at a relaxed running pace, or around an hour and a quarter on foot. If you like, add a second lap or jump straight into the water afterwards at one of the freely accessible spots on the shore.

It’s worth packing your running shoes! Right outside our front door, quiet paths lead through meadows and woods around the Turnersee – perfect for a morning run before the day by the pool begins. The Kleinsee lies between Seelach and Stein, just a stone’s throw north of the Klopeiner See, yet it is quite different: a quiet lake fringed by reeds and woodland, with no swimming facilities, and up to 15 metres deep. If you want to cast your line in peace, this is the place. You fish from the shore or from a rowing boat; there are no motorboats.

To fish you need the official Carinthian fishing licence (available to visitors as a guest fishing licence, Fischergastkarte) plus a day or week permit for the lake. The municipality of St. Kanzian publishes where to get them every spring; permits and rental boats are usually also available from businesses right on the lake in Seelach. Bring official ID, and ask about closed seasons and minimum sizes when you buy your permit.

  • Fishing season 1 April to 15 November

Our tip

  • The lake is at its quietest early in the morning and towards evening.
  • Check in advance with the tourist office or the St. Kanzian municipal office where permits and boats are available this year.

The Klopeiner See is not just a lake for swimming but also a well-stocked fishing water. Among the fish that live here are mirror and common carp, pike, zander, wels catfish, tench, eel, whitefish (Reinanke) and perch. You fish from the shore or from a rowing boat; combustion and electric motors are banned on the lake, as are live bait fish.

The permit is issued by the municipality of St. Kanzian, at the municipal office at Klopeiner Straße 5 (Mon–Fri mornings) and at other outlets. It is only valid together with the official Carinthian fishing licence or guest fishing licence, which you also get when you buy the permit. Bring official ID. Children aged 7 to 9 may fish with one rod free of charge when accompanied by an adult with a fishing licence.

The Sonnegger See in the municipality of Sittersdorf is a small lake, dammed in 1966, with views of the Karawanks. In summer it is above all a quiet swimming lake with a sunbathing lawn, and fishing is permitted as well. Pike and perch are among the fish here; the water is at most around 4.5 metres deep.

You can get the fishing permit at the Sittersdorf municipal office or at the café right by the lake. The bathing area is open daily from May to September, 8:00 to 18:00; if you want to fish undisturbed, find a spot away from the lawn. There is parking by the lake. A walk round the lake takes only a few minutes, so fishing combines easily with a family day at the lake.

The Gösselsdorfer See near Eberndorf is a shallow, warm moor lake in a protected landscape area. It is three to five metres deep and covered with large fields of water lilies. Here you can catch carp, tench, pike, wels catfish, perch and various coarse fish. You fish from the shore or from a boat, and night fishing is allowed. The 24-hour guest licence is available at the Gasthof Wallerwirt in Gösselsdorf – you don’t need to stay there – which also hires out boats. Because of the water lilies you’ll need sturdy tackle.

The Vellach rises near the Slovenian border and is Austria’s southernmost river. Its fishing stretches are about 29 km long and designated as a fly-fishing water of the Carinthian Fishing Association (Kärntner Fischereivereinigung). The clear mountain water is home mainly to grayling as well as brown and rainbow trout. Fishing is with artificial flies only; jigs, barbed hooks and other baits are prohibited. Licences for the middle and lower reaches are available from the municipality of Bad Eisenkappel and at the Pension Wutte in St. Primus.

On the left bank of the dammed Drava, the Kommunalgesellschaft Völkermarkt has managed fishing beats 11 and 13 since 2022 – together around 12.4 kilometres of water, from the Drava bridge three kilometres upstream and below the dam down to the middle of the Lorenzibach. In the calm, wide reservoir you can catch carp, wels catfish, pike and zander, as well as bream, tench, perch, barbel, trout and sterlet. You fish from the bank; a few quiet hours in the morning or evening are typical here.

You need two documents: a Carinthian fishing licence – for holidaymakers there is the time-limited guest fishing licence – and the fishing permit for the beat. You can get the permit from the Kommunalgesellschaft at Hauptplatz 2, from Miki’s Angelshop in Völkermarkt, from Stauseecamping Kuess in Edling (May to October) or from the Gasthof Jagerwirt in St. Ruprecht. The exact conditions are printed on the permit.

Tight lines! The lakes around St. Kanzian are a lovely spot for anglers. On the Klopeiner See, the municipality of St. Kanzian issues the fishing licence: you can get guest permits at the municipal office (Monday to Friday mornings) on presenting official ID. In addition, guests in Carinthia need an official visitor’s fishing card (Fischergastkarte). To protect the lake there are clear rules: no motorboats, no echo sounders, an unhooking mat is compulsory, and no more than two fish may be taken per day.

Recreational fishing with a licence is also possible on the Turnersee, only about ten minutes’ walk from the house – around ten species of fish live here, including carp, and even the rare noble crayfish. The quiet Kleinsee is home to pike, zander and carp. It’s best to ask locally about licences and current regulations – we’re happy to help.
