The Vogelpark Turnersee (bird park) is, so to speak, our neighbour: only about a kilometre from the house, it is an easy walk away. What began in 1982 as a passion and a hobby is today a lovingly kept, entirely privately run animal park. Among old trees live native and exotic birds from all over the world – from colourful parrots and parakeets to pheasants and waterfowl. You can get feed at the entrance, so children in particular can get really close to many of the animals.

Since 1998 there has also been a petting zoo, as well as a children’s playground and a small café with a shop. The park is laid out on level ground and well suited to pushchairs; dogs on a lead are welcome. Ideal for a leisurely morning or as something to do on a cloudy afternoon – and afterwards you are back at the Turnersee in a few minutes.

From approx. early May; May–September daily 9:00–18:00

Fallow deer in a wildlife enclosure

One of the loveliest short family walks around the Klopeiner See leads to the Fingerl family’s Wildgatter (deer park). The starting point is the tourist information office in Seelach; from there, trails no. 4 and 10 take you around 2.7 kilometres through shady forest with almost no change in height – easy to manage in about an hour, even with small children. Red deer, fallow deer, roe deer, goats and other animals live in the enclosure and can often be coaxed right up to the fence.

Admission is free and the enclosure is open all year. Right next door a Buschenschank (farm tavern) invites you to stop for a bite – a lovely opportunity for a Carinthian Jause with Speck (cured ham), homemade sausages and a glass of Most (cider). Please only feed the animals if it is expressly permitted on site.

  • Start: tourist information office in Seelach, trails no. 4 and 10

The Wildgatter-Tour is a short, shady forest loop on the north shore of the Klopeiner See and a good choice for families with younger children or for a walk on a hot afternoon. It starts at the tourist information office in Seelach: directly opposite, the path leads into the forest, partly with a view of the lake, to the Fingerl game enclosure. There you can watch the animals in the enclosure up close. Right next to it is the Mostheuriger Fingerl, a cider tavern.

The way back follows the Römerweg, past the small chapel of ease in Klopein, and the Beerenweg. Then you turn left back into the forest. This last section runs along the northern edge of the forest with a view over the municipality of St. Kanzian back to the starting point. You can comfortably manage the 2.7 kilometres in about an hour, with hardly any climbs. Sturdy shoes and a water bottle are all the equipment you need.

Our tip

Green tree python at the Reptilienzoo Happ

Snakes, crocodiles, monitor lizards and tarantulas – the Reptilienzoo Happ (reptile zoo) in Klagenfurt is said to have more species than any other reptile zoo in Austria. Around 1,000 animals live on about 4,000 m², including some 60 species of snake, numerous species of tortoise, turtle and lizard, and an insectarium. In the outdoor area you can see native snakes in near-natural enclosures, a Wörthersee aquarium shows the fish on the doorstep, and life-size prehistoric reptiles stand in the dinosaur garden.

Particularly exciting for children are the public feedings of piranhas and crocodiles, which traditionally take place on Saturday afternoons. As large parts are under cover, the zoo is a good destination for a changeable day – and together with Minimundus next door it makes a perfect Klagenfurt day. After almost 40 years under Helga Happ, new management is taking over, so it is worth checking the opening times before you go.

In the forest near Eitweg in the municipality of St. Andrä in the Lavanttal lies a small, shady ropes course with a special feature: the adults’ course starts with 17 stations in mixed woodland and then turns into a rock course reminiscent of a via ferrata. Depending on your stamina you choose one of three exits; at the end a slide or an easy path takes you back to the starting point. Children from 110 cm have their own course in the forest.

Climbing is only allowed after a safety briefing, which starts on the hour between 10:00 and 15:00 – register for it at least 24 hours in advance by phone or e-mail. From the car park it is about a ten-minute walk to the little reception hut, where the safety gear is handed out. Allow about two to three hours including the briefing, and come in sportswear and sturdy shoes. Thanks to its forest setting it stays pleasant even on hot days.

On the wooded slope of the Pyramidenkogel, just below the observation tower, you climb through the treetops at the Waldseilpark Pyramidenkogel (forest ropes course). Five courses with around 40 challenges lead over rope bridges, beams and nets from tree to tree, and to finish you fly over the forest on the flying fox. Safety is provided by a continuous safety-line system that you cannot accidentally unhook from – that is why there is no age limit, only a minimum height of 1.20 m.

After a briefing by the team you will usually be out for two to three hours. Wear sturdy shoes and comfortable clothes that can get dirty, and tie back long hair. The park only opens in dry weather. A visit combines well with a trip up the Aussichtsturm Pyramidenkogel and a snack at the Buschenschank Buchsbaum, whose owners also run the ropes course.

Above Stift Ossiach (abbey), about five minutes’ walk from the village centre, the Familywald Ossiacher See lies in an old beech forest: a nature leisure park of around 30,000 m² with a forest playground, petting zoo, treetop walk with suspension bridges, the Treenets (giant nets with four slides in the treetops) and the Fly-Line, a gentle forest coaster that even children from two can ride with an adult. On the same site is the Kletterwald climbing forest with 14 courses and over 150 elements in four levels of difficulty; with the hire equipment you have 2.5 hours there.

You don’t need to book – tickets are sold at the forest ticket office. Allow half a day to a full day. The dense canopy gives shade on hot days and keeps off light rain. For the Treenets children need socks and ideally knee-length trousers. On the terraces there are snacks, ice cream and coffee with a view of the lake. At weekends, on public holidays and in the school holidays there are also magicians and face painting.

On the Kanzelhöhe at around 1,440 m, the middle station of the Gerlitzen above the Ossiacher See, lies the Kanzelbahn’s Kids FunPark. From the valley station in Annenheim the gondola takes you up in about ten minutes. At the top there is summer tubing on a slide with rubber rings, a bungee trampoline for four children at once, a dino bouncy castle and a large wooden marble run; for young cyclists there is also a Kids Bike Park.

It is a good half-day outing with children from about four years old, ideally combined with a short family hike or a stop for food on the Kanzelhöhe. Bring a jacket – it is noticeably cooler up there than by the lake. Tubing and trampoline only run in the main season and in suitable weather; the gondola itself runs for longer.

You ride up from the valley station in Annenheim on the Kanzelbahn; tickets for tubing and trampoline are sold at the ticket office on the Kanzelhöhe.

The drive takes about an hour and a half, so it’s worth making a whole day of it: the attractions in the morning, then a hike or the onward ride towards the summit with a view over the lakes. For teenagers there’s also a forest high-ropes course and a 3D archery course. In rain and thunderstorms the tubing and trampoline are closed. Bring sun protection and a jacket.

At 1,875 m above sea level in the Nockberge, right by the small Falkertsee, the Heidi-Alm children’s adventure park tells the story of Heidi, Peter and the Alm-Öhi (Grandfather). A themed trail leads through the Swiss stone pine forest past more than 100 figures; at the end there is a wooden playground with slides, swings and an obstacle course, a tree house, Grandfather’s hut that you can walk into and a long tube slide. Marmots, goats, ponies and cows are part of it too.

The drive up the mountain road from Patergassen is long, so plan a whole day and combine the visit with a walk around the Falkertsee or an easy alpine hike in the biosphere park. The path is suitable for pushchairs. It is five to seven degrees cooler up there than in the valley, so pack a jacket and sun protection.

The drive into the Gailtal takes around two hours, so plan a whole day and combine the toboggan ride with an alpine hike on the Sonnenalpe or a visit to the Tressdorfer Alm. You can view a photo of your ride online. In the main season the last ride is at 17:00; in thunderstorms the run is closed.

On the Tressdorfer Alm, by the middle station of the Millennium-Express on the Sonnenalpe Nassfeld, Sölle Sport runs the Outdoorpark Nassfeld. In the Felsenlabyrinth (rock labyrinth), children from five and adults climb on belay over boulders, rope bridges and high-ropes elements; there is also a flying fox and a small via ferrata. Across the 14 courses the difficulty increases step by step, so beginners and experienced climbers alike will find something. Right next door is a 3D archery course through the forest.

The easiest way up is the Millennium-Express from Tröpolach in the Gailtal valley, followed by a short walk from the middle station to the entrance; from the Nassfeld pass it is about 25 minutes on foot along a flat path. Because of the long journey, plan a whole day out, which combines well with a walk across the alpine pastures. If you want to practise yourself, ride the pump track and the technical course of about 700 metres, both designed by bike pro Diddie Schneider. Next to them are a volleyball court and a flower meadow, and opposite is the Moskito Bar for a snack. There is little shade, so bring sun protection on hot days. Nice and relaxed, with no need to look for parking: in summer the colourful Bummelzug (tourist train) is as much a part of the Klopeiner See as ice cream is of the promenade. The small engine pulls three carriages and rolls along the lake at walking pace – children wave, adults enjoy the view. The classic round trip of the Klopeiner See takes about an hour; there are also longer excursions such as the three-hour 3-lakes trip, which includes the Turnersee too.

Especially for families with younger children or grandparents, the ride is a relaxed way to get to know the lakes. Routes, departure times and prices change from season to season – it is best to check at the stops, at the tourist information office or with the operator.

In Krenobitsch, west of Völkermarkt, the Riepl family have planted a maze of elephant grass on around one hectare. According to the owners it is the only one of its kind in Austria. Over the summer the stalks grow 2.5 to 4 metres tall, so even adults cannot see over the walls. Carved wooden animals are hidden along the paths, and each animal comes with a quiz question.

Anyone who answers all the questions correctly takes part in a prize draw at the end of the season, with a chainsaw-carved wooden figure to be won. In the middle of the maze there is a large playground with a sandpit and seating. There are also games for all ages, such as skittles and welly throwing. Parking and toilets are available. The maze is a lovely outing for a summer afternoon with children.

Around the world in a day: at Minimundus on the outskirts of Klagenfurt there are 166 models of famous buildings from every continent – from the Eiffel Tower and St Peter’s Basilica to the Statue of Liberty, plus ships and railways. Everything is built on a scale of 1:25, many models even from original materials such as sandstone or marble. The park covers around 26,000 m² of lovingly designed gardens.

For children there is an adventure trail, a Ferris wheel and a 4D cinema; the “Miniversum” planetarium is an experience even when it rains. On certain summer evenings in July and August the park stays open until 22:00 – when the models are lit up, there is a very special atmosphere. Allow two to three hours; the Reptilienzoo Happ (reptile zoo) is right next door.

The Europapark on the eastern bay of the Wörthersee is Klagenfurt’s largest park at 22 hectares – and a place where children can easily spend a whole afternoon. There is a big playground with separate areas for one- to six-year-olds and for children from six to 14, a skate park, beach volleyball and basketball courts and an open-air chess set. Between the lawns stand stone sculptures from international sculpture symposia.

The park is free to enter and combines well with a visit to neighbouring Minimundus or the Strandbad Klagenfurt lido. For breaks there is the Café am Teich, snacks and ice cream by the skate park and an ice-cream stand in front of the lido entrance; public toilets are by the café. Allow two to three hours, and on hot days ideally combine it with a dip in the lake.
