04 The region

When is the best time to come?

Welcome to Carinthia’s sunny corner! Our house is in St. Primus, only about ten minutes’ walk from the Turnersee – a small, peaceful swimming lake surrounded by meadows, woods and the Sablatnigmoor nature reserve. A few minutes further on is the Klopeiner See, one of the warmest swimming lakes in Europe, with Austria’s only continuous lakeside promenade. To the south rise the Karawanks with the Petzen and Hochobir, a glorious backdrop for every sunset.

With more than 2,000 hours of sunshine a year, southern Carinthia is one of the sunniest regions in Austria: long, warm summers, lakes up to 28 °C and a season that runs from May into late September. Just south of us begins the cross-border UNESCO Karawanken Geopark with dripstone caves, gorges and waterfalls, and Slovenia is only a stone’s throw away. Swimming, cycling, hiking or simply enjoying Kasnudeln (Carinthian filled pasta) and a Kirchtag village fair – every family finds its favourite day here.

May & June

Early summer

Water: May approx. 18 °C, June approx. 22 °C

Nature is in full bloom, the meadows are lush and green and the paths pleasantly quiet. Temperatures often climb above 20 °C as early as May, and from June the water invites you in for a swim, too. Ideal for bike rides, hikes and golf – and for anyone who appreciates peace and quiet and favourable conditions. At Whitsun and in early June the lakes celebrate their first festivals.

July & August

High summer

Water: July approx. 24 °C, August approx. 26 °C, peaks up to 28 °C

The warmest and sunniest weeks of the year – perfect for families with children. The lakes reach their highest temperatures, up to 28 °C on peak days at the Klopeiner See. By day there are pools, lidos and water sports; in the evening the lakeside promenade, the water and light show and fireworks. Tip: plan excursions and tours for the morning and jump into the water in the afternoon; allow for afternoon thunderstorms in the mountains.

September

Late summer

Water: September approx. 23 °C

A real insider tip: in September the lakes are still warm, the lidos quiet and the hiking trails empty. The clear air gives wonderful long views of the Petzen and Hochobir, and food and traditional festivals round off your holiday. Enjoy the last glorious sunny days of summer.

Water temperatures are long-term monthly averages (Klopeiner See); the Turnersee is at a similar level. Current values: kaernten.at
