Turnersee

The Turnersee is our home lake: from our house in St. Primus it is about a ten-minute walk to the shore – beach bag over your shoulder, across the meadows, no car and no hunting for a parking space. The small lake lies at 481 m above sea level between meadows, woods and the Sablatnigmoor bird sanctuary, in the middle of a Natura 2000 area. It is much quieter than the neighbouring Klopeiner See, pleasantly warm in high summer, and its bathing water has been rated “excellent” for years.

There are seven bathing spots around the Turnersee – from the municipal lido with its large sunbathing lawn and playground to small, natural lidos with a kiosk such as the Strandbad Hribernig in St. Primus. Early in the morning the lake is often as smooth as glass, perfect for your first swim of the day or a trip on a SUP. In the evening the Petzen and Hochobir glow in the alpenglow.

Away from the water there is plenty to do without any hustle: the Slow Trail Turnersee takes you all the way round the lake, the Bike Break at the western end has a play tower, a pump track and an e-bike charging point, and the Vogelpark Turnersee (bird park) is our next-door neighbour. For a meal you sit right by the water, for example at the Moskito-Bar or the Strandrestaurant Ilsenhof. In early June the village celebrates its Seefestl (lake festival).

On the south-west shore of the Turnersee, below St. Primus, the Pension Hribernig runs a small, natural lido. There is a very large lawn, a playground and a gentle entry into the water – ideal for families with small children. The Turnersee lies in a Natura 2000 area and warms up to 28 °C in summer; from the water you look across to the Hochobir and the Petzen.

On the beach a kiosk sells drinks, ice cream, pizza and snacks, you can hire parasols and sun loungers, and there is storage for boats and swimming gear. The lido is an easy walk along a woodland path, and there is a car park near the beach. For a relaxed afternoon by the lake, all you need is a towel and sun cream.

Sun loungers and parasols are free, subject to availability, and there are changing cabins and generous toilet and shower facilities.

At the Moskito bar you can get light meals, ice cream and drinks on a shady terrace with a lake view. Children will find a big sandpit, play equipment, table tennis and a beach volleyball court; right in front, at the Bike Break, there is a climbing tower shaped like a water lily, a pump track and a bike skills course. A peaceful spot for a half or full day by the water, easy to reach on foot or by bike.

The Turnersee is at its most beautiful early in the morning. Often a light mist still hangs over the water, the reeds are quiet, and to the south the Karawanks with the Hochobir stand out against the sky. If you walk down to the shore before breakfast, you usually have the lake to yourself. It is the best time for photos, for a first swim in the warm moor water or simply for a coffee on the jetty.

In summer, on Mondays from 8:00 to 9:00, there is Rise & Shine yoga at Camping Breznik right on the jetty, free with the Aktiv Card. The session suits all levels, and children aged 12 and over may join if accompanied. Bring sportswear and a beach towel or mat, and sign up at the campsite reception by 21:00 the day before.

On the north shore of the Turnersee in Obersammelsdorf lies the public lido of the municipality of St. Kanzian. The sunbathing lawns rise in terraces up the slope, with sunny and shady spots and a view across the lake to the Karawanks. The Turnersee is one of the warmest swimming lakes in the area and reaches up to 28 °C in high summer – pleasant for children and anyone who doesn’t like the cold. Typical activities are swimming, snorkelling and a turn on a stand-up paddleboard, which you can hire at the ticket office.

A self-service bistro by the entrance provides food and drinks, and a large car park is right next to it; but from the house you can also easily get there on foot or by bike. For a day at the lake all you need is a towel, sun protection and cash, as card payment isn’t possible. Dogs are not allowed in the swimming area, only in the entrance and terrace area of the bistro.

The Turnersee near St. Primus is a small, quiet swimming lake of around 44 hectares with a reed belt and water lilies along the shore; in high summer the water warms up to around 28 °C. Several lidos line the lake – Ilsenhof, Strandbad Turnersee, Moskito, Hribernig and the municipal lido on the north shore in Obersammelsdorf. The lake lies in a Natura 2000 area: lapwings and stonechats breed on the marshland, and noble crayfish live in the water.

At the municipal lido you can hire stand-up paddle boards and take a leisurely trip around the lake; you can launch your own board at the bathing areas. It is loveliest early in the morning, when the water is like glass, or on summer evenings – in July and August the lido is open until 21:00. There are terraced sunbathing lawns and a self-service bistro at the entrance. Dogs are allowed only in the entrance and terrace area, not on the lawn.

Older ones jump off the long wooden jetty. The Turnersee is a moor lake and warms up to around 28 °C in summer.

On the shore there is a playground and a beach restaurant for lunch, ice cream and drinks. For families with small children the lido is good for a whole day, because water, shade and playground are all close together. From 16:00 a reduced entry fee applies. The Vogelpark Turnersee (bird park) is, so to speak, our neighbour: only about a kilometre from the house, it is an easy walk away. What began in 1982 as a passion and a hobby is today a lovingly kept, entirely privately run animal park. Among old trees live native and exotic birds from all over the world – from colourful parrots and parakeets to pheasants and waterfowl. You can get feed at the entrance, so children in particular can get really close to many of the animals.

Since 1998 there has also been a petting zoo, as well as a children’s playground and a small café with a shop. The park is laid out on level ground and well suited to pushchairs; dogs on a lead are welcome. Ideal for a leisurely morning or as something to do on a cloudy afternoon – and afterwards you are back at the Turnersee in a few minutes.

The Sablatnigmoor with a mirror-smooth water surface

Right next to the Turnersee lies one of the most valuable wetlands in Austria: the Sablatnigmoor. Together with the Turnersee it is a remnant of a large lake from the last Ice Age. It has been a nature reserve since 1979, was declared a Biogenetic Reserve by the Council of Europe in 1988, and has been an internationally protected Ramsar wetland since 1992. More than 170 bird species have been observed here – among them great crested grebes, little grebes and, with a bit of luck, the brilliant blue kingfisher.

The Natura Trail, a circular path of about 4.5 km, leads through the area in around an hour. Along the way there is a bird-watching tower and the Tomar-Keusche, a lovingly restored observation station and visitor centre of the nature conservation association. In the summer months the association offers ecological and ornithological guided tours – an experience for nature explorers big and small.

This day hike from the Alpenverein Klagenfurt links the two lakes with the hills in between. You start on the lakeside promenade on the north shore of the Klopeiner See, follow the shore eastwards and then climb up to the Georgiberg with its little church and wishing bell. Path 5 takes you on to the Gracarca, a hill settled since early historic times, and to the Danielkapelle, where a meadow in front of the chapel invites you to take a break.

Via Grabelsdorf, paths 3, 5, 6 and 12 lead down to the Turnersee, which you walk around between the Sablatnigmoor and the shore before returning to the Klopeiner See. At 16 kilometres and just under 400 metres of ascent, the loop is best suited to walkers with stamina. A large part runs on tarmac and forest roads, so good trainers or light hiking boots are enough. Take plenty of water, as there are hardly any places to stop for food or drink along the way.

Frequently asked questions

How far is it from the holiday apartments to the Turnersee?

About 1 km (an 11-minute walk) – just pick up your beach bag and go, no car needed.

How warm does the Turnersee get?

In high summer the small, sheltered lake warms up to as much as 28 °C. The swimming season runs from about May to September, and the municipal lido opens on 1 May.

Do the lidos charge for entry?

For the Strandbad Hribernig, the nearest one, we give you passes for free entry. At the other lidos it varies – please ask on site or at the municipality of St. Kanzian, as the entry system was changed recently.

Turnersee or Klopeiner See – which suits you better?

The Turnersee is smaller, quieter and more natural – ideal for families and anyone looking for rest rather than bustle. The Klopeiner See is larger, with a lakeside promenade, cafés, boat hire and evening events. From our house both are easy to reach: the Turnersee on foot, the Klopeiner See by bike.

Distances and travel times from our house (Lauchenholzer Straße 9) are calculated with OpenStreetMap routing and rounded – guide values for car, bike and on foot.
