Water up to 28 °C, Austria’s only continuous lakeside promenade and summer evenings with lake festivals – a quarter of an hour by bike from our holiday apartments.

The Klopeiner See – often also spelt Klopeinersee – is the heart of our holiday region and one of the warmest swimming lakes in Europe: in high summer the water reaches up to 28 °C, with an average of around 26 °C in August. The reason: hardly any water flows through the lake, so it stays in the basin for a long time and warms up in the sun. It lies at 446 m above sea level, is up to 48 m deep and has drinking-water quality; in the bays the pale lake bed shimmers turquoise.
Austria’s only continuous lakeside promenade runs all the way round the lake – about 5.3 km, an easy hour and a half. The north shore is lined with cafés, ice-cream parlours and shops, the south shore is quieter and more natural. For swimming there are plenty of public and private lidos, plus pedal and rowing boats, SUP, kayaks and even diving courses.
On summer evenings the lake comes alive: water and light shows, the PromenadenZauber on the north shore and, in July, “See in Flammen” (lake in flames) with one of the biggest lake firework displays in Austria. And if the weather lets you down, the Kärntner Badehaus (lakeside spa) is open all year with saunas and a heated infinity pool.
Our three holiday apartments are in St. Primus, between the Klopeiner See and the Turnersee: the Klopeiner See is about 4.5 km (14 minutes by bike, 5 by car) away, the quieter Turnersee only about a ten-minute walk. The apartments – Terrace Right, Terrace Left and Balcony Right, 60 to 65 m² for up to 5 or 6 people – share a solar-heated pool and a large play lawn. If you ride to the lake by e-bike, you can charge the battery at our house for free.

Just a stone’s throw west of the Klopeiner See, separated from it by the village of Seelach, lies its quiet little sibling: the Kleinsee. There is no promenade and no bustle here, but a dense belt of reeds, water lilies, dragonflies and plenty of peace. Especially early in the morning, when wisps of mist hang over the water, the lake is a wonderful place to take a deep breath.
The Kleinsee is very popular with anglers: pike, zander and carp are at home here. You can get fishing permits from the outlets of the St. Kanzian municipality. For walkers and cyclists, the Kleinsee combines beautifully with a loop around the Klopeiner See – that way you experience both faces of the region in a single morning: the lively lakeshore and the quiet natural idyll.

Evening swim in the Klopeiner See4.5 km · 14 min by bike · 5 min by carHardly any water flows through the Klopeiner See, so it warms up a lot in summer: at up to 28–29 °C it is one of the warmest alpine lakes.
Hardly any water flows through the Klopeiner See, so it warms up a lot in summer: at up to 28–29 °C it is one of the warmest alpine lakes. A swim is most pleasant in the late afternoon and early evening, when the day visitors head home, the sun is low over the western shore and the water still holds the warmth of the day. As there are no motorboats on the lake, it is quiet then, too.
Most of the lidos on the shore belong to hotels. The municipal lidos are open to the public, such as the Sportstrandbad Süd on the south promenade in Unterburg; the municipality of St. Kanzian can tell you about admission and opening hours. Bring a towel, a light jacket for the way home and, at dusk, a head torch. Afterwards a short stroll along the lakeside promenade is well worth it.

The Slow Trail Kitzelberg is a leisurely loop from the west shore of the Klopeiner See up the 686-metre Kitzelberg. It starts in Seelach at the turn-off from the Westuferstraße towards the Kleinsee. First you walk along the reed-fringed Kleinsee, an Ice Age lake popular with anglers, then a wide forest road climbs steadily through the woods. On the way you look across to the parish church of Stein im Jauntal, where the custom of Striezelwerfen (throwing plaited bread) is still kept alive today.
At the top there’s a modern viewing platform with one of the finest lake views in Carinthia: below you lie the Klopeiner See and the Turnersee, behind them the Jauntal and the Karawanks. For the 6.8 kilometres and around 245 metres of ascent, allow a good two and a half hours including breaks. The Klopeiner See is one of the few Carinthian lakes whose shore is publicly accessible all the way round – a continuous lakeside promenade of around 5.3 kilometres runs along the water. The nicest time to run is early in the morning: the promenade is almost empty then, the air still cool and the lake usually as smooth as a mirror. A lap takes about 30 to 35 minutes at a relaxed running pace, or around an hour and a quarter on foot. From there it continues via Gösselsdorf to Jaunstein, where it joins the Jauntalweg R1D. The roughly 15 kilometres are almost entirely asphalted and hardly steep; there is only a short climb between the Drava and the lake plateau.
The route works well as a link: you cycle down to the Drava Cycle Path, into Eberndorf with its abbey or to the Gösselsdorfer See. It does not pass St. Primus or the Turnersee – you get there on the back roads towards St. Kanzian. The circuit is around 5.3 kilometres long and almost flat. Without breaks it takes you a good hour. Along the lively north shore there is one lido, café and ice-cream parlour after another, while the south shore between Seelach and Unterburg is quieter and more wooded. There you’ll also find spots with free access to the water.
The circuit is ideal for an evening or a morning with children; the path is mostly surfaced and suitable for pushchairs. You can start at any point, and the lido on the west shore is a handy place to begin. In summer you can swim along the way. A towel in your rucksack is all you need, as the lake warms up to over 25 °C in high summer. Dogs on a lead are allowed on the path, but usually not in the lidos.

A short detour from the south shore to the viewing platform on the Kitzelberg adds a lovely view to the circuit.

On a paved viewing terrace on the Süduferstraße stands a large wooden frame with the lettering “#KlopeinerSee” and “#Südkärnten”. It frames the view across the lake to the north shore and the mountains behind. In front of it is a wide wooden bench where you can position yourselves for a souvenir photo in the frame. There’s a drinking fountain right next to it, as well as an artwork by architecture students from the University of Ljubljana.
The spot is right by the “Südpromenade” bus stop and makes a good short stop on a walk or bike ride around the lake. The light is loveliest in the afternoon and towards evening, when the sun shines from the west onto the north shore. Allow 10 to 15 minutes, longer if you’re taking several pictures with children.

West of the Gracarca, above Grabelsdorf, there is a small wooded hilltop at 676 metres: the Dreiseenblick. From here, depending on where you stand and on the foliage, you look out over the Klopeiner See, Turnersee and Kleinsee, and to the south to the Karawanks. The spot is a station on the Gracarca cultural trail. An information board explains that the hilltop belonged to the Celtic hilltop settlement on the Gracarca, which was at its largest in the 2nd and 1st centuries BC.
The starting point is the edge of Grabelsdorf by the Grabelsdorfer Kreuz (wayside cross). Along forest paths and tracks you are at the top in about 15 to 20 minutes. If you have more time, combine the detour with the circuit over the Gracarca and the Georgiberg (around 6 km, a good 2 hours). Sturdy shoes are enough, and in summer the forest provides pleasant shade.

South-east of the Klopeiner See rises the 624-metre Georgiberg, with the little Georgikirche (church of St George) on its top. The church was first mentioned in records between 1060 and 1070 and is the last surviving building of a medieval castle. In the little tower of the southern chapel hangs the wishing bell: young women used to make the pilgrimage up here to ring it and wish for a husband. Today families and couples like to ring it too.
The starting point is the hamlet of Unterburg by the Gasthof Fichtenhof. A forest path climbs about 150 metres in roughly 30 to 40 minutes. From the top you look over the Klopeiner See, towards Völkermarkt and as far as the Saualpe. On the west side, a prehistoric rampart with a ditch is still clearly visible. Via the Gespensterwegsattel you can extend the walk to the neighbouring Gracarca. Sturdy shoes are enough. Allow about 1.5 hours there and back with a break.

Nice and relaxed, with no need to look for parking: in summer the colourful Bummelzug (tourist train) is as much a part of the Klopeiner See as ice cream is of the promenade. The small engine pulls three carriages and rolls along the lake at walking pace – children wave, adults enjoy the view. The classic round trip of the Klopeiner See takes about an hour; there are also longer excursions such as the three-hour 3-lakes trip, which includes the Turnersee too.
Especially for families with younger children or grandparents, the ride is a relaxed way to get to know the lakes. Routes, departure times and prices change from season to season – it is best to check at the stops, at the tourist information office or with the operator.
