05 The region

In Carinthia’s sunny corner

Four swimming lakes within cycling distance, the Karawanks on the horizon and Slovenia just around the corner.

Our house is in St. Primus, only about ten minutes’ walk from the Turnersee – a small, quiet swimming lake surrounded by meadows, woods and the Sablatnigmoor nature reserve. A few minutes further on is the Klopeiner See, one of the warmest swimming lakes in Europe. To the south rise the Karawanks with the Petzen and the Hochobir.

With over 2,000 hours of sunshine a year, southern Carinthia is one of the sunniest regions in Austria: long, warm summers, lakes up to 28 °C and a season that runs from May into late September.

May & June

Early summer

Water: May approx. 18 °C

Nature is in full bloom, the meadows are lush and green and the paths pleasantly empty.

July & August

High summer

Water: July approx. 24 °C, August approx. 26 °C

The warmest and sunniest weeks of the year – perfect for families with children.

September

Late summer

Water: September approx. 23 °C

A real insider tip: in September the lakes are still warm, the lidos quiet and the hiking trails empty.
